ID Desks

The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee operates specialised ID Desks for examining the authenticity of documents. These desks, part of the Expertise Centre for Identity Fraud and Documents (ECID), support partners in the security chain. On this page, you can read what the ID Desks can do for you and how to engage our assistance.

Who is this information for?

The information on this page is specifically aimed at partners in the security chain. If you work for an organisation such as the National Police, IND, a local council, or another government agency and require support with an identity or document issue, you will find the necessary information here.

What the ID Desks can do for you

The core of our work is technical document examination. Our experts investigate the authenticity of various value documents, such as passports, identity cards, residence documents, and banknotes. This applies to both physical documents and copies. Additionally, we conduct expert facial comparison examinations to verify someone's identity. When we determine a forgery, we provide legal support by drawing up a technical official report to assist the investigative process.

Our assistance, however, extends beyond just investigation. We also invest in prevention through knowledge and training. We offer various courses, from basic training (DOC 1) to expert level (DOC 3). We also provide awareness training on-site, for example at local councils, to increase our partners' knowledge and awareness of document fraud.

How to request our assistance

If you have doubts about the authenticity of a document, please follow the steps below:

  1. Internal consultation
First, discuss your doubts with a direct colleague or supervisor, out of the presence of the document holder. Thoroughly examine the document together.
  2. Contact the ID Desk
If doubts persist, contact the nearest ID Desk directly. By emailing clear photos of the document to us and then calling, our experts can review it immediately and often provide a preliminary assessment quickly.
  3. Engaging the police
If the doubt is well-founded and you suspect a criminal offence, involve the police. The police will, if necessary, arrange further handling with the ID Desk for the drawing up of an official report.
