The Netherlands starts implementation of European Entry/Exit System (EES)

On Sunday 12 October 2025, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee began the phased rollout of the European Entry/Exit System (EES) in the Netherlands. The implementation is starting at two maritime border posts: Eemshaven and Eemshaven and IJmuiden/Port of Amsterdam. All Schengen countries will be introducing the EES in the coming months, which will replace the traditional stamping of passports for non-EU nationals.

The Netherlands has opted for a gradual implementation to introduce the system in a controlled manner and to minimise potential disruption for travellers. Following the start at the maritime border posts, smaller airports will follow. Subsequently, a small-scale launch will take place at Schiphol Airport, after which the rollout there will be further expanded in early December.

The full implementation of the EES at all Dutch border posts is scheduled to be completed within a six-month period. At border posts where the EES has not yet been introduced, the stamping of passports will remain in force for the time being.

Biometric data

The EES applies to non-EU nationals wishing to stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. Instead of a passport stamp, biometric data in the form of fingerprints and a facial image will now be registered.

The new system contributes to improved border control and helps to combat illegal migration.
